What is Terramate?

Terramate is an open-source IaC orchestration platform that enhances Terraform, OpenTofu, and Terragrunt with GitOps workflows, drift detection, observability, and policy enforcement. Rather than replacing your existing IaC code, Terramate sits alongside it as an orchestration and management layer — adding capabilities that vanilla Terraform doesn't provide.

Key Features

Change Detection — Terramate detects which Terraform stacks are affected by a code change and runs only those stacks in CI/CD. In repos with hundreds of stacks, this dramatically reduces plan/apply time.

GitOps Workflows — Infrastructure changes flow through pull requests with automatic plan previews. Terramate Cloud shows the plan diff in the PR, requiring review before apply — bringing GitOps discipline to IaC.

Drift Detection — Continuously monitors your cloud infrastructure against Terraform state. When someone manually changes a resource in the AWS console, Terramate detects the drift and alerts your team.

MCP Server — Terramate launched an MCP (Model Context Protocol) Server in 2025, enabling AI agents like Claude and GitHub Copilot to query infrastructure state, run plans, and create remediation PRs directly through natural language.

Stack Orchestration — Define dependencies between stacks and Terramate executes them in the correct order, managing parallelism safely.

Observability — Dashboard showing stack health, last apply status, drift status, and deployment history across your entire infrastructure.
